write a post about ABC Selfie, all opinions are my own.
This post is a little bit different from what you usually
see here on Dearest Lou but I’m super excited to tell you guys about Selfie, a new comedy premiering on
ABC this Tuesday night 8pm/7pm central. Selfie stars Eliza Dooley (Karen Gillan)
a social media-obsessed girl who gives up likes to be liked and has thousands
of followers who follow her every post. After an embarrassing work incident
goes viral, she realizes that these followers aren’t real friends and that no
one reaches out to comfort her when she’s feeling down. She then reaches out to
Henry (John Cho) to rebrand herself and learn how to connect with people in the
real world.
I watched the pilot episode and thought it was both
hilarious and had so many truths to it. I think inside each of us there is a
little bit of Eliza. I know I love social media because I personally seek
friendships with others that I wouldn’t be able to meet around the globe. I’ve
met so many amazing people and would love to follow up with some of my virtual
friends I have yet to meet at some point in my life.
If you can’t wait for
the premiere feel free to follow this
link to the pilot episode.
After watching the
pilot episode, I took a Selfie personality quiz to see which “Selfie” profile I
related to the most. After taking the
quiz I came out to be a lurker. I was then challenged to go 24 hours off of
lurking social media on Tuesday September 16. In order to be less tempted to see
what my friends were up to, I logged off of all my social accounts the night
before.
It was honestly refreshing to go 24 hours without checking
anything and I found that I had a lot more free time to do other things I enjoy
during the day. Some of the events of my day that really stood out to me were:
·
I finally had time to organize my clothes
·
I went to the park with Zaden distraction-free
·
Reading a book after the boys went to sleep for
the night
Those are things I normally do on a daily basis but it was a
completely different experience without checking my phone. I honestly felt like I was disconnected to
the outside world and at times really wanted to see what my friends were up to.
However, on the positive side I felt so close to my family and in the moment.
While cleaning I listened to music and danced with Zaden. I
didn’t check my phone once to see what others were up to which really helped me
treasure that silly moment with my son. At the park I was able to spend every
minute enjoying the last of the summer rays and seeing my little boy play with
new friends. Heck, even reading at night was much more enjoyable without my
phone as a distraction. I honestly try not to spend very much time on my phone
or laptop while my guys are awake but some days aren’t as great as others.
Going a full 24 hours without social media was awesome. I
want to try and live in the moment with those around me, rather than seeing
what others are up to. Although connecting with others is great at times, some
moments should be treasured solely with those around you. I highly encourage each of you to do a social
media cleanse of your own, whether it be not checking what your friends are up
to, go 24 hours without posting what you are up to on social media, or whatever
you would like to challenge yourself to go without. Enjoy living in the moment
for one full day. I promise you won’t regret it.
It looks like such a good show!
ReplyDeleteI love this! I think for at least one day a week should be unplugged and social media free :) It's crazy seeing the difference it makes just to put our phones down. I always worry that I might forget the special things - so I record and photograph everything! But sometimes it's nice just to BE in the moment. Good for you Mama!
